FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood men's soccer team hosts Winthrop in Big South action Friday at 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- Longwood dropped its last match against UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon in Farmville, 3-0.
- Louis Beckett scored a pair of goals. And Benin Yao tallied a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs.
- Beckett scored in the eighth and 61st minutes while Yao scored with 16 minutes on the clock.
- Lucca Barros made three saves in the Asheville goal for the clean sheet and Youssou Ouendeno stopped four shots for the Lancers.
- Syrus Connolly, Ezrah Serralde and Jesus Macaya posted shots on goal for Longwood.
ALL-TIME SERIES
- Winthrop leads the all-time series with the Lancers, 14-3-1, since it began in the 1978 season.
- The last five matches have been split, 2-2-1, with Longwood's victories in that span coming in the same calendar year.
- Longwood won, 2-1, in Rock Hill, S.C., on March 29, 2021 and then again, 3-2, on Oct. 6 of that year in Farmville.
- The Lancers are 2-4-1 at home all-time against the Eagles.
SCOUTING WINTHROP
- Winthrop enters the match at 1-9-2 overall and 1-4-0 in the Big South under first-year head coach Dan Ridenhour.
- The Eagles are coming off of a 1-1 draw against College of Charleston at home on Tuesday.
- Jayco Castro scored a 69th-minute equalizer to force the deadlock.
- Winthrop's lone victory in the league was a 3-1 win over Radford on Oct. 4 at home.
- The Eagles have scored six goals and conceded 25 in 12 matches this season.
- Castro leads the team with a pair of goals, four points and 26 shots in 11 matches played.
- Jack Kilstrom has appeared in all 12 matches in goal and has a and has a 2.14 goals-against average and .671 save percentage with one clean sheet. He's made 49 saves on the year.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE, RPI THINGS
- Longwood has played the 17th most difficult schedule in Division I men's soccer as of Oct. 16 and is 143rd in the RPI.
- The Lancers are 1-4-0 against teams inside the top 100 of the RPI, earning a 1-0 victory at home over Elon on Sept. 23, which was receiving votes in the national polls at the time. Elon is currently 80th in the RPI.
- Longwood also drew, 2-2, at Campbell on Sept. 16. The Fighting Camels are now 122nd in the RPI, but were inside the top 100 at the time of that match.
PLAYING THE BEST
- The Lancers have played two teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll this season.
- In addition to West Virginia, which was No. 15 at the time of the match, Longwood also played then-No. 9 High Point.
FIVE NAMED TO BIG SOUTH MIDSEASON WATCHLIST
LANCERS PICKED THIRD IN BIG SOUTH POLL
- Longwood was selected to finish third in the Big South preseason coaches poll, announced on Aug. 13
- The team received 41 points in the voting to finish behind just High Point and Gardner-Webb, which earned 62 and 55 points, respectively. Those two schools split the first-place votes with 2024 regular-season champion Panthers garnering six and the Runnin' Bulldogs picking up the remaining two nods for the top spot.
- The third-place tag for Longwood represents a tie for the highest-ever finish in the Big South preseason poll, matching the 2022 squad.
NEXT UP
- Longwood travels to Navy on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ESPN+.
- The Midshipmen lead the all-time series, 7-6-0, but Longwood has won the last two matches, claiming victories in 2023 and 2024.
