FARMVILLE, Va. — Louis Beckett scored two goals and Benin Yao tallied a goal and an assist as UNC Asheville defeated the Longwood men's soccer team in Big South Conference action on Sunday.
UNC Asheviile received a pair of goals on set pieces in the first half and added a tally after halftime for the final margin. Goalkeeper Lucca Barros made three saves for the Bulldogs to earn his second clean sheet of the season.
Asheville (6-4-1, 2-2-0) opened the scoring in the eighth minute as Beckett finished a free kick off of an assist from Yao. Ringa Takagi's bending service met Yao's head at the top of the six-yard box before being guided home for the early lead.
The Bulldogs doubled their advantage in the 17th minute as Rodrigo Mendes' driven corner kick was headed to the back post and in by Yao.
Jesus Macaya had a chance to get Longwood on the scoreboard in the 57th minute, shortly after Asheville's Arnor Hardarson hit the crossbar from 12 yards out. Barros just tipped the effort from Macaya over the bar following an inside feed from Syrus Conolly created the opportunity.
The Bulldogs closed the scoring in the 61st minute when Hardarson charged to the end line and through a host of defenders before laying the ball off to Beckett for the goal.
Asheville outshot the Lancers, 11-6, on the day with each team earning five corner kicks.
Ezrah Serralde in the fifth minute and Conolly in the 40th also had shots on goal for Longwood.
Youssou Ouendeno made four saves in the Lancers' goal.
Longwood (2-8-2, 0-4-0) next plays Friday at 7 p.m., at home against Winthrop on ESPN+.
