HARRISONBURG, Va. — Junior
Timéo Puech won in straight sets from the top spot in singles, but James Madison came away with a 6-1 victory over the Longwood men's tennis team in non-conference action on Saturday.
Puech dispatched the Dukes' Esteve Agusti, 6-3, 6-3, to stay perfect in dual-match singles play this season, cutting the Longwood deficit in half. JMU, however, won the final four singles matches of the day and the victory.
James Madison (1-1) took the doubles point as Markus Giersiepen and Dennis Wiebe defeated
Gary Huang and
Ian Perl, 6-2, on court two and Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt topped
Marko Mrdak and Puech, 6-4, at No. 1.
Francisco Sinopoli extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 No. 3 singles win over Mrdak before Puech's team-best 11th win of the season.
Schmitt then outlasted
Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 2. Zach Fleishman followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over
Petter Lindquist on court four, Wiebe beat
Seva Rusin, 6-4, 6-1, on No. 5 and Giersiepen defeated Perl, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6.
The Lancers dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Longwood next plays at Barton on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
