Men’s Tennis Falls at James Madison, 6-1

Puech improves to 2-0 at No. 1 singles with straight-set win

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Junior Timéo Puech won in straight sets from the top spot in singles, but James Madison came away with a 6-1 victory over the Longwood men's tennis team in non-conference action on Saturday.

Puech dispatched the Dukes' Esteve Agusti, 6-3, 6-3, to stay perfect in dual-match singles play this season, cutting the Longwood deficit in half. JMU, however, won the final four singles matches of the day and the victory.

James Madison (1-1) took the doubles point as Markus Giersiepen and Dennis Wiebe defeated Gary Huang and Ian Perl, 6-2, on court two and Agusti and Aurelien Schmitt topped Marko Mrdak and Puech, 6-4, at No. 1.

Francisco Sinopoli extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 No. 3 singles win over Mrdak before Puech's team-best 11th win of the season.

Schmitt then outlasted Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 2. Zach Fleishman followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Petter Lindquist on court four, Wiebe beat Seva Rusin, 6-4, 6-1, on No. 5 and Giersiepen defeated Perl, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6.

The Lancers dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
