WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary received first-half goals from Aidan Morrison and Hamilton Howes and shut out the Longwood men's soccer team in non-conference action at Martin Family Field on Wednesday.
Morrison wired a shot into the into the upper right of the net past Longwood goalie Max Hinke from outside the box in the 13th minute for the lead. Lucas Caldas set up the goal, laying the ball off for Morrison's right-footed blast and first goal of the season.
The Tribe (2-1-0) doubled its lead with just a shade more than 10 minutes remaining in the half as Tre Barrett's free kick found the head of Hamilton Howes, who nodded the ball into the side netting for his first career goal.
From there, William & Mary goalies Ryan Eapen and Cole McNally posted a clean sheet. Eapen earned the start in the nets, making three saves in the first 59 minutes, before going off with an injury. McNally went the rest of the way, stopping a 69th-minute effort from junior Aaron Asamoah. Eapen, a sophomore, who did not see match action in his first season in Williamsburg, earned his first career victory. He made stops on Diego Diaz (27th minute), David Ambaek (44th) and Markus Krogstad (53rd).
"We are certainly disappointed in the result," said Longwood head coach Paul Gilbert. "It wasn't our best effort tonight. We will take a hard look at the film, learn from our mistakes and prepare for Navy on Saturday."
Hinke took the loss despite collecting five saves.
Longwood, which had 53 percent of possession on the night, but was outshot, 15-7, dropped to 0-2-1 overall in defeat.
Next up, the Lancers return home to take on Midshipmen Saturday at 1 p.m., at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. The Lancers won last year's meeting between the two on Sept. 8 in Annapolis, Md., 2-0.
