GREENSBORO, N.C. — Longwood junior goalkeeper Max Hinke made a career-high eight saves — four in each half — but high-powered UNC Greensboro scored 20 minutes apart in the first half for a 2-0 win over the Longwood men's soccer team in non-conference action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Tuesday.
Hinke secured seven saves two times in his 32-match career between Longwood and Rhode Island prior to Tuesday.
The Spartans (3-1-1) pressured Longwood (1-3-1) from the start, scoring in the eighth minute and didn't look back. UNCG's Jack Birch blasted a low, driven corner kick at the top of the box through traffic and by Hinke for the lead. Yoshiya Okawa took the set piece, allowing Birch to one-touch it home to earn an assist on the play.
In the 28th minute, the Spartans' Konstantinos Georgallides charged to the byline on the left of the box before dishing to Enzo Dovlo in front for the goal.
The Spartans carried the play in the opening 45 minutes earning 57 percent of the possession and held an 11-3 advantage in shots, including a margin shots on goal.
Junior Aaron Asamoah put a shot on frame just after the halftime interval in the 47th minute, but UNCG goalie Seth Wilson made the stop. Wilson finished with three saves on the night, picking up his third clean sheet of the season in five matches this season.
UNCG had an opportunity to add to the lead in the 80th minute, but Basile Marc ripped a spot kick wide of the left post.
The Spartans finished the night with a 60-40 advantage in possession, a 21-7 lead in total shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
