HOW IT HAPPENED:
Early on, the match featured back and forth action as the two teams tested each other in the opening minutes. Both sides traded possession through the midfield, with Richmond carding the first shot but Longwood's
Meghan Piazza forcing the first save one minute later off a shot.
However, Richmond was the side that struck first when a cross took a bad bounce off a Lancer defender in front of the goal in the 23
rd minute.
The battle in the midfield continued for the next 15 minutes before Richmond struck again. This time, Anna Garcia turned at the 18-yard box and slipped it to the corner for a 2-0 lead right before halftime.
While Longwood pressured after halftime, generating three corner kicks, Richmond's back line was able to stave off the Lancers. Longwood posted nine shots on the match, outshooting Richmond 9-7.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We had another good start to the game, possessing the ball and dictating play," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "We created a couple chances in the first half, and then that own goal rattled us a bit. Once we conceded the second, we were chasing the game the rest of the way. We need to find that first goal moving forward to start putting other teams under pressure."
UP NEXT:
Longwood will take on the reigning SOCON champs, Western Carolina, on Sunday at 1 p.m. The match will air on ESPN+.
