Lancers Just Short in 4-3 Loss at Presbyterian

Longwood wins final three singles matches

CLINTON, S.C. — The Longwood women's tennis team won the final three singles matches to finish, despite Presbyterian taking a 4-3 dual-match victory at the Templeton Tennis Courts in Big South Conference action Sunday.

The Blue Hose swept the doubles point and then took the first three singles encounters, clinching the win, but the Lancers won on courts four, five and one, respectively, accounting for the final margin.

"Today was a tough battle for our women," said Longwood head coach Carlos Lora. "We had our chances to pull away with the match, but we were not able to today. We still competed very well all throughout the lineup. Now we can get back to work this week and work on the things that are still needed to be improved."

Down, 4-0, in the match, Longwood receiving a straight-set victory from Sophia Marchetta, who beat Luciana Piedra, 7-6 (4), 6-3, followed by a three-set win by Karina Rizvanova. She outlasted Claire Giddings, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. 

Feline van Eijkelenburg closed the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph over McKenzie Davis.

Presbyterian (8-8, 1-0 Big South) began the day with a doubles victory from Davis and Mathilde Delaney at No. 1 against Phoebe Mitchell and Rizvanova, 6-0. Oriana Izarra and van Eijkelenburg then fell to Piedra and Madison Dennett, 6-3, at No. 2 and Claudia Sanchez and Valentina De Sousa topped Marchetta and Nina Hederich in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2).

Delaney beat Mitchell on court three, 6-1, 6-3, to open singles action. Dennett defeated Kashmira Manohar, 6-0, 6-2 on six before Sanchez beat Izarra, 6-2, 6-1, on two.

Longwood (4-8, 0-3) returns to action Saturday at noon, hosting Campbell.
