HIGH POINT, N.C. — Jefferson Amaya hit a low screamer into the side netting from outside the penalty area in the 76th minute as No. 22 High Point nipped the Longwood men's soccer team, 1-0, in the Big South semifinals at Vert Stadium on Sunday.
The goal, Amaya's third of the season, was set up with a diagonal pass on the turf by Anthony Ramirez from the left flank and rocketed past Longwood freshman goalkeeper
Tor Fletcher.
Win the win, High Point (11-3-2) advances to its sixth consecutive Big South championship match, and will host second-seeded Gardner-Webb — a 2-0 winner over fifth-seed Presbyterian in the other semifinal — next Saturday.
The El Dorado, Trinidad and Tobago native, made his first collegiate start in place of junior
Max Hinke in goal, who missed the match due to injury. Fletcher acquitted himself well, making three saves, including one on a Celestin Bondel diving header in the 62nd minute to keep the match level.
Fletcher also stopped a Ross Johnstone header in the 52nd minute and made another save on Koven Johnson in the 84th.
Junior
Aaron Asamoah had all three of the Lancers' shots on target on the night and nearly the opener in the eighth minute as he fired a low, skipping shot that High Point goalie Josh Caron (6-3-2, three saves) pushed onto the post.
Asamoah also tested Caron in the 79th and 81st, but he was up to the task both times.
The loss for Longwood brings the season to a close at 5-10-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the league. The Lancers qualified for the postseason for the first time since 2021 and won a match in the Big South tournament for the first time since 2016.
