GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Longwood women's tennis team opened the 2024 spring season with a 5-2 loss to Elon at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Friday.
"Today was a good test for us to see where we are at to start the season," said Longwood head coach
Carlos Lora. "It was good to see that we were able to fight all the way to the end against a good regional team but, it also showed us a few things that we need to continue to work on as a team moving forward."
Elon (1-1) began the day by sweeping the doubles point as Sibel Tanik and Lizette Reding topped
Phoebe Mitchell and
Karina Rizvanova, 6-1, on court one, Ella Suk and Miray Kona defeated
Oriana Izarra and
Kashmira Manohar, 6-1 on court three and Madison Cordisco and Mariana Reding beat
Feline van Eijkelenburg and
Sophia Marchetta, 6-4.
Trailing, 5-0, in singles action, Marchetta dispatched Elon's Helen Sarikulaya, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 to get the Lancers on the scoreboard. Mitchell closed the match with a three-set win over Konar, 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 for the final margin.
Longwood returns to action Saturday in a pair of matches in Charlottesville, Va. LU takes on Marshall at 1:30 p.m., followed by 12th-ranked Virginia at 5 p.m.
