Women's Soccer Earns Road Point At UNC Asheville

Fitzpatrick's Second Half Tally Leads Lancer Rally in 1-1 Draw

ASHEVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer earned a road point behind a strong performance at UNC Asheville on Saturday night. The Lancers (3-6-3, 1-1-1 Big South) controlled the ball for much of the night, and Madison Fitzpatrick banged home a second half goal in a 1-1 draw.

For Fitzpatrick, it was her second goal of the season, and it erased a one-goal halftime deficit for the Lancers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood was the aggressor for much of the night, and the majority of the match was spent in UNC Asheville's (5-2-4, 1-1-1 Big South) half of the field.

The Lancers outshot UNC Asheville 12-9, but the Lancers put nine on target and created chance after chance. Longwood had 11 corner kicks and forced UNC Asheville's goalkeeper, Grace Murray, to make seven saves.

Asheville was the side that struck first against the run of play. Kaiya Boyd slipped a cross inside the six that Nao Kawasaki tapped home for an early 1-0 lead.

Longwood refused to be denied though, and the Lancers turned up the heat. While the Lancers couldn't find the equalizer before halftime, they came out even stronger to start the second half.

Finally, Fitzpatrick broke through. Peyton Curney touched a wonderful ball up the middle, and Fitzpatrick split the defense before tracking it down and slipping it home to make it 1-1 in the 62nd minute.

The Lancers kept the pressure up, but a potential game winner proved to be elusive.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Coming from behind, on the road, against that team, on their senior night, is a positive step for us in conference," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "After conceding the goal, we had to respond mentally first, and we were able to do that. We had some good possessions and kept creating chances, and that's all you can really ask until the breakthrough comes."

"Fitz had a tremendous impact in the second half and deserved that goal," Dyer added. "We're proud of the reaction in dealing with adversity, and that makes us stronger moving forward."

UP NEXT:

Longwood hosts High Point to open a three-match homestand next Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m., and it will be aired on ESPN+.
