Longwood Battles, But Falls 1-0 At Howard

First Half Goal Pushes Bison Past Lancers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Longwood women's soccer put together a strong effort on the road while playing their third game in six days, but a first half goal by Howard was the difference in a 1-0 decision.

Despite the loss, Mary Kate Levush was strong in goal, racking up 13 saves to keep Longwood (1-3-2) in the match as the team begins a four-game road swing.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Levush excelled throughout the match as Howard (2-2-1) peppered the Lancer keeper with 24 shots, with 14 on target. She made six saves in the first 45 minutes.

However, a well-executed corner kick by the home side gave Howard the lead in the 17th minute. Samone Knight headed home Samantha James' corner for the only goal of the match.

After halftime, the Lancers threatened multiple times on the fast turf, but Howard stayed aggressive and put Levush to the test as well. She made seven saves in the final 45 minutes as the Bison posted 15 second-half shots with seven on target.

For Longwood, one of the team's best chances came in the 59th minute. Meghan Piazza touched a pass to Julia Gill for a point blank shot, but Howard's goalkeeper, Trinity Knox, managed to make the reflex save and preserve her team's lead.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It hurts me to say this, but I think we got what we deserved today," said Longwood Head Coach Todd Dyer. "We were timid, reactive and disconnected for large stretches of the game, and that's never going to be good enough. In the end, both teams had chances during the flow of play, but they capitalized on a set piece and that was the difference. It's on me to make sure we're ready to play, and we just weren't today. Now we have a whole week to figure out why and fix it."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers stay on the road with a trip to Loyola University in Baltimore in one week. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.
