HOW IT HAPPENED:
Although the men conceded the first doubles point to Hampton, they certainly responded well afterwards. The duo of Timéo Puech and
Yoav Weinberg put things in motion with a 6-2 win followed by a nail-biting victory from
Alejandro Uribe and
Ernest Rocabert that went all the way to a seventh point.
Following doubles play, the Longwood men took care of business, claiming points from
Guillermo Cagigas and Weinberg from the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
After Weinberg's win, the two teams played to the clinch, sealing the Longwood men's second consecutive dual victory.
The women started strong by claiming the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The duo of
Maria Saez and
Karina Rizvanova eased past Mio Kozaki and Diana Starodubtseva 6-4, and
Sophia Marchetta and
Wiktoria Czerny cruised past Lucia Jorrin Fernand and Franzene Tsui 6-1.
That paved the way to three straight singles wins at the top of the lineup for the Lancers.
Emma Nurgazieva took care of business with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Saez only dropped one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2.
Meanwhile, Marchetta had to grind in the opening set at No. 3 and won 7-5 before finding a better flow and taking the second set 6-2 to clinch the match for the Lancers.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Great showings by both teams today. The men showed a ton of grit and pulled out some tough matches and the women took care of business and were solid all around" said Longwood Director of Tennis Adam Jackson.
UP NEXT:
Longwood women's tennis will be back in action this Friday to take on Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m. Both the men and women will face Chowan University this upcoming Sunday.
