Men's Soccer Battles, Falls 2-1 at Gardner-Webb in Season Finale

Adeyemi Scores Late Lancer Goal, but Runnin' Bulldogs Edge Lancers

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Longwood men's soccer matched up and went toe-to-toe with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night in their Big South regular season finale. The back and forth fixture went to the home side, though, with Gardner-Webb (4-8-4, 2-2-3 Big South) just nipping the Lancers (6-6-3, 1-5-1 Big South) 2-1.

Desmond Adeyemi had a late goal for Longwood, the first of his collegiate career, as the Lancers battled for the full 90 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The match was a back and forth affair that saw both sides create chances in the run of play. The shot tallies and corner kicks were almost identical, as was possession.

Both sides threatened forward repeatedly, and Longwood had a variety of great chances throughout.

However, it was Gardner-Webb that struck first in the 30th minute off a cross that Santiago Hoyos headed home. The Runnin' Bulldogs added a free kick goal by Max Fisher after halftime, but Longwood refused to go away.

The Lancers applied pressure forward, and eventually broke through in the 90th minute off a strong sequence up the middle of the field.

With time winding down, Ethan Stevenson carried it into space, and he found freshman Darcy Moffat at the top of the 18. He slipped a pass to Moffat, and Moffat played a back heel to Adeyemi. Adeyemi promptly struck it home to cut the lead to 2-1 with less than 30 seconds to go.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"A very even contest defined by a couple of moments we best leave behind us," said Longwood Head Coach Jon Atkinson. "You won't win games without taking your chances—that's been a constant theme throughout the conference part of the season at least—and this puts a stress on a team that can and will cost you. It will sting for a bit. I trust the hurt of the games we have let slip will linger for a wee while in order to make sure next season is a different outcome.

"From within, we feel we deserved way, way more, a far better team than conference position suggests, but until you win, few will care," Atkinson added. "We have great character on the squad and fantastic new talent that will improve us, it will just take time."
