FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood freshman forward
Peyton Curney scored in a critical moment for Longwood again. The Big South Conference named her the Freshman of the Week for a conference record fourth time this season.
Â
Since the Big South began recognizing a Freshman of the Week in 2016, no player has won it more than three times.
Â
Curney, who leads Longwood with four goals this year, banged in the game-tying goal against High Point on Saturday afternoon. With Longwood down 1-0, she found space in front of the High Point goal and nipped home a feed from
Alayna Palamar in the 70
th minute. That goal allowed the Lancers to earn a 1-1 draw against HPU.
Â
The dynamic forward has a knack for scoring big goals, with all four of hers on the season going down as either game winners or game-tying efforts. She is among the top 10 in the Big South in goals and points, and she is tied for the league lead with three game winning goals.
Â
She has had a point in three straight matches for Longwood to help the Lancers go unbeaten in that stretch.
Â
The team is in the midst of a three-match homestand and hosts USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The match will air on ESPN+.
