HOW IT HAPPENED:
A banged up Longwood (4-3-2, 0-2 Big South) started a bit slow, and High Point (6-2-2, 3-0 Big South) controlled the tempo early.
The Panthers played patient on the ball in the first 45 minutes and used an aggressive press to keep the pressure on. Noah Holmes, the preseason Big South Offensive Player of the Year, led the charge with a pair of goals and an assist up top.
The visitors broke through on Seth Antwi's goal in the 15
th minute before Holmes also struck a few minutes later.
After halftime, Longwood pushed for a bit more and found some success, with nine shots in the second half.
Gonzalo Carrasco and
Simao Coelho led the charge, and the duo combined for seven shots for Longwood on the night.
Even as Longwood created space, it was High Point that proved to be more clinical in the final 25 yards, with a pair of goals in the second half.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"There were too many parts of the game we weren't on the same page, and against a quality outfit, it could really hurt you," said Longwood Head Coach
Jon Atkinson. "We started on the front foot but quickly found ourselves in a passive state that didn't help our cause. We have to own it and make the adjustments necessary and come out flying Wednesday."
UP NEXT:
Longwood stays at home to wrap up a six match homestand on Wednesday night. The Lancers take on Winthrop at 6 p.m., and the match will air on ESPN+.
