FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer roared out of the gates after halftime against USC Upstate, and the Lancers (4-6-4, 2-1-2 Big South) took down the league leaders 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Peyton Curney and
Julia Gill did the damage on offense, and the Lancer back line also shut down a potent USC Upstate (8-2-4, 5-1 Big South) offense that had only been shut out one time prior this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
While the first half featured back and forth soccer with the two defenses limiting good chances both ways, the second half was all Longwood.
The Lancers came out and owned the ball. They outshot USC Upstate 12-1 over the final 45 minutes and 18-8 on the night.
That offensive pressure started on the second half kickoff, as the first five minutes were largely played in Longwood's offensive half. Every time USC Upstate played it forward, the Lancer back line imitated a brick wall to send it the opposite direction.
In the 50
th minute, the pressure paid off.
Alayna Palamar won the ball at the midline and lofted one forward to Curney. The reigning Big South Freshman of the Week took one touch and promptly centered it to
Julia Gill. Gill rifled it into the upper corner for a 1-0 lead and her third goal of the season.
Even after the goal, Longwood kept applying pressure. The Lancers surged forward again and again and showed no fear. Even as USC Upstate started to push numbers up the field, Longwood's back line stayed composed and turned the Spartans aside.
In the 83
rd minute, Curney put the game to rest.
Brooke Bonner played a free kick up the field, and Gill headed into the center of the 18-yard box. Curney raced to the ball and powered it home past for her fifth goal of the fall.
The Lancer back line made sure that the goals stuck, with Bonner,
Sydney Robertson, Palamar and
Amanda Arnone keeping the lanes in front of goalkeeper
Mary Kate Levush clear. Levush had a trio of saves as well. It was the team's fifth shutout of the season.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"That team is top of the league for reason, and to get points against them is an accomplishment," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "We couldn't get out of our own end in the first 15 minutes, but then we decided to stand our ground and compete. Both teams had their moments, but we were able to finish our chances and that was the difference. We will appreciate this result tonight, and then we have to get dialed back for Wednesday."
UP NEXT:
Longwood hosts Radford on Wednesday, October 18. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The match will air on ESPN+.
