Longwood Men's Golf Sit In Fourth At The TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate After Day One

Men's Golf /
Old Hickory, TN. – Longwood men's golf completed the first round of the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate. The tournament hosted 13 teams to compete on the 71- par, 7,020-yard course. The Lancers placed fourth in the contest and scored 299 (+15) on the day. The second round was cut short due to thunderstorms, and it is set to be completed in the second day of the tournament.

Nick Rakes had an impressive first round. He tied for fourth place overall and second in birdies after he carded four in the round. He scored 73 (+2) and is seven over through 15 holes in the second round. Fellow Lancers Scott Jordan, and Zane Moore found themselves tied for 17th after the first round. Jordan and Moore both scored 75 (+4) in the opening round, and Jordan is two over through 14 holes in the second round. Moore, meanwhile, was one over through 14 holes in round two.

Payo Larrain and teammate Brendan Dunphy both tied for 25th . Larrain scored 76 (+5) and sunk three birdies in the round. Dunphy also finished with a 76 (+5) on the day.

"It may sound like a broken record, but today was another day where we just needed to hang in there and get the best we could out of it," explained head coach Kevin Fillman on his team's finish on day one.  "With the weather we've had to deal with almost every tournament round this spring, it seems like that has been one of our main goals everyday.  I thought we did a good job of controlling what we could for much of the day.  Most, not all but most, of our lost shots were due to things that were out of our control, especially in the morning round.  We've lost some more shots in the second round, thus far, that were more self-inflicted, but a number of those have been because we've let the things we can't control get to us a little bit.

"It's frustrating when we're out there in that mess.  Believe me, I get it.  We just need to get back to where we were for much of this morning when we get back out there tomorrow morning.  We had some guys show some fight today, so I'm encouraged by what I saw.  I expect for us to do some really good things tomorrow."
