WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Temps in the mid-40s and winds up to 25 to 30 miles per hour didn't present Longwood men's golf with ideal weather, but the Lancers battled throughout a tough round on Monday afternoon.
Â
Longwood didn't quite finish its second round at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate at the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course. Four of the team's five golfers still have a hole or two left to play in their second round of 36 at the Par 71, 6,817 yard course.
Â
In the opening round,
Nick Rakes and
Christian Michael had enough mastery of the elements to piece together a solid first 18 holes. Rakes shot an even-par 71 and was tied for fifth after tallying four birdies. In his second round, he sits five over through 17 holes.
Â
Meanwhile, Michael posted a 72 to shoot one over after notching four birdies of his own in his first 18 holes to tie for 10th in the 80 player field, but he is eight over through 16 holes in his second round.
Â
"Today was a day that we just needed to hang in there and get the most we could out of it," said Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "There were times when we did a good job of it and other times when we did a poor job. I'm sure the rounds went that way for pretty much everybody. Right now, we just need to focus on the things we need for tomorrow, which are to go finish the holes we have left in the second round strongly and then go play the final round that we're capable of playing.
Â
Scott Jordan shot a 77 to finish the opening round six-over and finish in a tie for 38th, and the freshman is one over through 17 holes in his second round with a chance to climb the leaderboard.
Â
Ryan Hammer was eight over with a 79 through his first 18 holes to tie for 47th.
Brendan Dunphy shot an 87 in the opening round and was in 77th before bouncing back through most of his second round by shooting five over through 16 holes.
Â
The Lancers sat in the middle of the pack in the 15-team field with a combined team score of 299 in the opening round. Multiple teams still have holes to finish on the course for the second round, and they will do so before beginning the final 18 holes tomorrow to wrap up the 54-hole event.
