SAVANNAH, Ga. – An up and down opening day at the Savannah Intercollegiate has Longwood tied for seventh out of 16 teams in the 54 hole event.

Sophomore Nick Rakes continues to lead for the Lancers and is currently tied for 12^th in the  91-player field, followed by Brendan Dunphy who sits tied for 31^st place at the end of day 1. Rakes had an overall strong round that saw him card six birdies and eight pars to finish two-under on the day. Dunphy had three birdies followed by 11 pars that his him one-over on the day. Ryan Hammer started the day by shooting 13-over in the first round, but he answered by shooting under-four in the second.

The Lancers look to continue with their late surge that pushed them up to seventh, and build on the momentum. As a team, Longwood is over-15 on the day, but had the fourth best round two score at the intercollegiate. Longwood fell as far as 13^th in the team rankings on the day, but thanks to a strong finish, have climbed back to seventh.

"We came out this morning and, for whatever reason, looked very uncomfortable.  Some would maybe say it was 'rust' from not playing a true tournament round in a few months.  I don't know if I believe all that, but we certainly didn't have much feel to start.  We work a lot on both the 'how to' and the 'feel' sides of the game, and they go hand-in-hand," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "I am obviously very happy with the way we bounced back in the afternoon.  We're a high-character team, and we know our guys aren't going to just lay down when things get tough."

"Ryan and Christian both knew they didn't do anything to help us in the morning, and both showed what they're made of in the second round.  Ryan's turnaround was pretty special.  We're looking forward to getting back out their tomorrow and picking up where we left off this evening."
