HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lancers (1-5-2, 0-1) came out with the game's first attack in the opening seconds of the match. The Camels (6-2-3, 2-0-1) defense held their ground, and opened up the scoring in the game on a counter attack goal that Broussard put away off of a Gameiro cross.
Ethan Stevenson forced a decent save from the Campbell goalie, Edu Rodriguez in the 29th minute when he hit a shot destined for the top left corner.
Both sides had their share of chances the rest of the way before the first whistle, however Campbell was able to capitalize on three of theirs to take a 4-0 lead into the half.
Longwood started the second half the same way as the first and were rewarded for their pressure when Santos finished from long range outside the box to pull one back for the Lancers.
Shortly after the goal, the Lancers received a red card and were forced to play a man-down the rest of the way.
Campbell added a late goal when Hernandez smoothly finished into the left side of the net for the final goal of the game.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"While it may be hard to look past the score line there was more to it than meets the eye," said head coach
Jon Atkinson after the match's conclusion. "I found the first half filled with positive aspects and felt the game had equity bar the score line and therein lies the difference."
"We played well in good moments, possessed well, created a few noteworthy chances and counter pressed decently and then boom, find ourselves in a 4-0 hole."
"Campbell are a fantastic team and can punish the switch-offs with ruthless execution and they did, simple as that. Second half was another story and we won't know how close we could have clawed ourself back into it due to circumstances we don't need to highlight insofar as I didn't feel we got the rub of the green tonight and have to flush it and get ready for Saturday."
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
The two sides split 24 fouls evenly at 12 apiece.
The Lancers goalies
Alexandre Durand and
Jeff Gates combined for eight saves between the two of them.
Fabio Podmelle, a center-back, also had a goal-saving save in the second half.
Longwood had five corners to Campbell's 10.
Leif VanSlyke and
Ethan Stevenson led the Lancers in shots with a combined six.
UP NEXT:
The Lancers travel to Winthrop on Saturday to continue Big South play.
