FARMVILLE, Va.—Kyleigh Cox's header and a shutdown defense led Longwood women's soccer past Winthrop in a 1-0 conference win Tuesday night.
Goals (Assist)
62' Longwood—Kyleigh Cox (Kiersten Yuhas)
How it Happened:
During the first half, both teams struggled with finding momentum. Longwood (4-6-3, 1-2-1 Big South) had six shots but couldn't quite find the back of the net.
Longwood showed up with high energy to start the second half. The Lancer defense dominated Winthrop (3-5-2, 0-3-1 Big South) and didn't surrender a shot after halftime.
It didn't stop there. Cox put the lancers on the board in the 62
d minute.
Kiersten Yuhas launched a corner kick in the air, and Cox headed it into the back of the net to give the Lancers the 1-0 lead. It was the senior's first collegiate goal.
From that point on, Longwood's defense slammed the door shut.
What They're Saying:
"Nothing comes easy in our conference, and this game is another example of that," said Longwood women's soccer Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "The first half was pretty even and both teams had chances, so responding the way we did at the half put us in a position to win."
"Earning a shutout like that always gives us a chance and then Kyleigh scored a great goal on that corner to get us out in front," Dyer said. "Then it's a matter of managing the game while keeping our foot in the gas. We did just enough and secured the three points."
"I'm ecstatic right now, it's exciting to score a goal, so I'm very happy," smiled Cox. "Honestly it feels good to win. We haven't won in a few games. Winning a conference game, feels like an accomplishment and makes us feel like we are on a good road for the future games." Cox stated. "We've gone through three games already and we haven't won one yet."
"I mean it's exciting, I couldn't believe I scored honestly, but I just love being happy and celebrating with my teammates which was awesome," said Cox. "We have to play together, and we have to keep the ball in the front third of the field and we have to win as a team, play as a team, and accomplish a win."
