FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood men's soccer team fell 2-0 to the USC Upstate Spartans on Saturday.

72' – USC Upstate: Pablo Diaz (Andrin Zumbühl)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood pushed out of the gate and had the game's first attack when Mason Butcher that forced Upstate goalie, Luca Bulfon to make a save. Ethan Stevenson then followed up 16 minutes later with a thunderous header that rattled the woodwork and kept the game scoreless.

It wasn't until the 21st minute when USC Upstate recorded their first shot through Braiden Hall that was saved by Longwood keeper, Alexandre Durand. The Spartans broke the tie in the 41st minute when Diaz controlled a Montero cross and placed it in the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Lancers had the majority of the possession in the Upstate half in the second half but were unable to capitalize on any chances created. Diaz scored his second of the match in the 72nd minute from a Zumbuhl cross to double the Spartan lead.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We let teams off the hook," said head coach Jon Atkinson after the game. "I think teams then look to respond and our resources are depleted. I get it, it's not easy for the guys to see a lot of effort for nothing but that's the reality we are living right now and the answers must be found from within. We look to the next game and do better."

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

There were four cards in the game, only one went to Longwood.

Durand made three saves in goal.

Stevenson led Longwood in shots with two. Gonzalo Carrasco and Mason Butcher both added a shot on goal.
