WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Annabelle Jennings surged to the top of the Longwood leaderboard in her 2021 fall debut to highlight the Lancers' season-opening rounds at the W&M Fall Invitational, hosted by William & Mary at the par-72, 6,219-yard Kingsmill Resort River Course.
Â
Jennings, a native of Chesapeake, Va., closed day one of the two-day, 54-hole tournament on a high note with pars on five of her final six holes en route to a 75-74—149 (+5) that was Longwood's top individual score on the day. Her second-round 74 was also Longwood's lowest score of the day, trailing the 75 she carded in the first round and the 75 senior
Diana Domenech logged in round two.
Â
The performance earned Jennings a top-30 spot heading into Monday's final round, while Domenech followed her 28th-place standing tied for 37th in the 79-player field.
Â
As a team the Lancers sit in 12th place through 36 holes and finished the day with every countable round under 80.
Â
"Even though individually everyone may not have been at their best, with a team score of 307-304, I'd take that all day," said Longwood head coach
Brittany Dabule, who embarked on her third season leading the program Sunday.
Â
"We can't compare ourselves to the rest of the field; almost all of these teams we don't see ever, and they aren't in our conference. We can only compare ourselves with how we have been over the past couple years as a team. We didn't have to count a score over 80, and we already have improvements of team scores from last year, so at the end of the day, it was a good start to the season. Tomorrow our goal is to pull together and finish the tournament with a good team store.
Â
Following Jennings and Domenech were
Grace Huffman, whose 76-79—155 (+11) has her tied for 53rd, and
Emma Landis, whose 79-77—156 (+12) has her sitting by herself in 57th. Senior
Bobbi Uhl also competed and will enter Monday's round tied for 66th with an 81-78—159 (+15).
Â
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
