Valedictorian Reaver, Daniel Award Winner Hommey Earn Commencement Honors

Women's Soccer /
FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood women's soccer standouts Madison Hommey and Carrie Reaver have enjoyed many an on-field celebration during their four-year careers with the Lancers.

But when their names were read aloud on the public address system at Longwood University commencement this past Saturday, they did so in front of their largest audience to date.

Trading their blue and white Longwood soccer uniforms for black caps and gowns – and a rainbow of stolls and sashes – Hommey and Reaver received two of Longwood University's most prestigious senior awards, along with their undergraduate diplomas.

Reaver, a four-year starting defender for the Lancers, graduated as the 2021 co-valedictorian and one of three recipients of the Sally Barksdale Hargrett '21 Prize for Academic Excellence, Longwood's top academic award annually given out at Commencement. She is the fourth Longwood student-athlete to graduate as valedictorian since 2015, joining a list that includes former women's soccer player Kelsey McDonald (2015), women's basketball player Kate Spradlin (2019) and women's lacrosse player Dana Joss (2021).

Meanwhile, Hommey, a three-year starter in the midfield, received the Dan Daniel Senior Award for Scholarship and Citizenship, which recognizes the Longwood student who exhibits a commitment to a life of public service and leadership.

Those awards cap parallel standout careers for both seniors, who served as co-captains for Longwood women's soccer this past season while also maintaining two of the most sterling off-the-field resumes Longwood has seen in its Division I era.

Reaver's journey to being crowned co-valedictorian has seen her maintain a perfect 4.0 grade point average through her Longwood career, doing so as a double major in biology and Spanish, with a concentration in neuroscience. A two-time Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and two-time Academic All-District III selection, she also excelled on the soccer field where she was a an All-Big South defender, four-year starter and multi-year team captain for a Longwood team that went 30-22-11 overall and 19-8-9 in Big South play during her tenure.

Hommey has been equally as impressive on and off the field for the Lancers, maintaining a 3.961 GPA as an elementary and middle school math education major. A three-year starter who overcame a season-ending knee injury early in her career, she also served as President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee this past year and was selected as a Senior Guiding Light in the 2021 Longwood CHI ceremony. Alongside Reaver in the backfield and midfield – and atop the Lancer lineup as a team captain – she helped the Longwood program become one of the stingiest defensive teams in the Big South and advance to four consecutive Big South Championship tournaments.

Both Hommey and Reaver will continue their educational pursuits after graduation, with Hommey returning to Longwood to pursue her master's in health and physical education and Reaver moving on to the Mount Sinai Brain Institute in New York City before embarking on medical school.
