SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Brandon Weaver and
Brendan Dunphy fired 70 (-2) and 72 (E) respectively in their second rounds, as both sit in the top-20 after day one at the Wofford Invitational.
Â
Dunphy, who ended the day in 14
th with a card of 73-72—145 (+1), has now shot three consecutive rounds of 73 or lower dating back to the third round of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate. The sophomore ranks third in the field with a scoring average of 2.88 (-1) on par three holes, and racked up 23 pars and seven birdies in this first 36 holes.
Â
Weaver did his damage on the par five holes, averaging 4.25 (-6), the fourth best average in the field, to end his day at 76-70—146 (+2). The returning senior fired eight birdies and 21 pars, as he raised 36 spots in his second round to sit in T-17
th with 18 holes to play.
Â
As a team, the Lancers posted scores of 299-290—589 (+13), as their nine shot improvement in the second round catapulted them six spots on the leaderboard into a tie for seventh. Longwood finished the day sixth in the field with 34 birdies, led by
Miles Parroco's 11, the second most in the tournament through two rounds. The sophomore finished with scores of 76-71—147 (+3), as he is currently in a for 26th.
Â
However, despite the large birdie totals along with two eagles, Longwood tallied the second-fewest pars with 93, limiting their ascent up the leader board. Â
Â
"We just made way too many big numbers today," said Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "There were plenty of birdies out there, and we made our fair share, but we also played a whole lot of poor holes from beginning to end.Â
Â
"The golf course's biggest defense is the putting surfaces and all the fall-offs around them. Even though it was a major point of emphasis for us, we had to play too many putts from the wrong side of the hole, or, worse yet, we missed on the green on the wrong side. In both cases, it's tough to score when the only thing a player can do is get the ball to the other side and then play from there."
Â
Freshman
Nick Rakes, making his fifth-consecutive appearance in the Lancer lineup to begin his collegiate career, ended the first two rounds at 74-77—151 (+7). Rakes tallied six birdies and one of the two Longwood eagles on the day, as he finished T-58
th after 36 holes.
Ryan Hammer, making his second consecutive start, picked up the other eagle for the Lancers, posting scores of 82-84—166 (+22). Â
Â
"We'll need to do a much better job tomorrow," added Fillman. "When we do, there's still a lot of teams for us to beat."
Â
The third and final round of the Wofford Invitational will take place on Tuesday, March 13 with the first Lancers teeing off starting at 8 a.m.
