DURHAM, N.C. – Powered by doubles and singles wins from senior Guillermo Cagigas and sophomore Ernest Rocabert, Longwood rode a doubles point and three singles victories to a 5-2 road triumph over N.C. Central Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
 
The win was Longwood's first on the road this season and saw the Lancers (2-2) pull away in singles play thanks to a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 from Ignacio Sandoval and a 6-1, 6-2 clincher from his sophomore classmate Rocabert.
 
Cagigas, playing in the No. 2 slot for the second time this season capped the day by grinding out a 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-5 over his No. 2 counterpart from N.C. Central (0-3).
 
The match was a three-and-a-half-hour marathon that began with Longwood taking the doubles point behind a 6-4 win at No. 1 from Guilherme Sergio and Rocabert and a 6-3 win at No. 2 from Cagigas and freshman Andrew Ilett. Those doubles wins were the first this season from both pairs, which also gave the Lancers their first doubles-point victory of 2021.
 
The Lancers will now get a two-day break to prepare for a Commonwealth clash against James Madison this Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at the New Lancer Courts.
