GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Josh Fordyce's second goal of 2021 got the Lancers within a goal late on Thursday afternoon, but UNC Greensboro held on 2-1 to continue their historic start to their season.
Entering the game with two consecutive clean sheets and a shutout streak spanning 254 minutes, Fordyce broke through the stout Spartan defense in the 86
th minute to bring the Lancers within a goal. Awarded a free kick just outside the UNCG box, the Destin, Fla. native curled a free kick attempt over the wall and into the left corner, securing his second free kick goal of 2021 and snapping the Spartan shutout streak at 341 minutes.
However, the Spartans (4-1-0) were able to fend off Longwood in the remaining minutes as they held on to win their fourth consecutive game.
"We are delighted to get this game in such short notice as our boys need to play," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "We knew this was going to be a test from the off, and UNC Greensboro didn't disappoint. They are a talented, physical team and well coached. We are still working on our identity and relationships on the field, and this game pushed us to perform at a level you won't get from practice, so to play UNCG gives me very few complaints as to where we are in this journey."
Win the win, UNCG has now matched their best start to a season since 2004—that squad that won 19 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, started 16-1. The Spartans, whose win streak includes a 3-0 win over Big South school Gardner-Webb, have outscored opponents 11-2 in their last four contests.
UNCG's high-powered offense was also able to snap a scoreless streak of Longwood's. Led by reigning Big South Defender of the Week
Jacob Reimers, the Lancers (0-2-1) went over 149 minutes without conceding a goal before Theo Collomb redirected a cross from teammate Sam Coad into the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
Longwood nearly answered the goal in the 29
th minute. Freshman defender
Mason Butcher played a beautiful, one-touch ball over the Spartan defense which teammate
Eli Carr chased down in the UNCG box. However, Spartan goalkeeper Niclas Wild was able to deflect Carr's shot out of bounds, preserving the 1-0 lead that would stay until halftime.
The potent UNCG offense struck again in the second half, as Mani Austmann lifted a shot just over the outstretched arms of Reimers. Longwood senior goalkeeper his hand on the shot, the ball still managed to bounce back into the net and double the Spartan lead, 2-0.
In the 77
th minute, UNCG was given a red card after Emmanuel Hagan's slide tackle took out Carr, giving the Lancers a man-advantage for the last thirteen minutes of action.
Fordyce and Longwood were able to take advantage. After
Kedus Michael was taken down at the top of the Spartan box, Fordyce stepped bent his free kick into the back of the Spartan net to get the Lancers within a goal, but were unable to find the equalizer in the closing 3:26.
"The lads applied themselves, competed hard and left it all out there," added Atkinson. "I am content that we are growing as a team with each game."
Up next for the Lancers is their home opener, as they return to Farmville to host Gardner-Webb on Sunday, March 7. Play is set to start at 2 p.m.
