WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In a long day of golf at the Golden Horseshoe Golfclub consisting of two rounds and 36 holes,
Brandon Weaver leads Longwood in 26
th place as the Lancers sit in 15
th with one round remaining in the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate.
Â
Originally scheduled as a three-day event, the format change meant a marathon day of golf for Longwood. After posting a team score of 312 in round one, the Lancers bounced back to close the day with a 295 (+15). Despite the long grind, Weaver remained consistent as he totaled just eight bogeys in 36 holes while not recording any doubles. His performance was good for 27 pars, second most in the 88-golfer field.
Â
Christian Michael bounced back from an opening round 78, recording the Lancer-low score of the day with a second-round 70 (E) to move into T-31
th with 18 holes to play. His late-day surge included an eagle on his first hole of the second round, as Longwood was the lone team to record two eagles after
Nick Rakes added his own.
Â
"I honestly cannot find appropriate words to describe what happened today, especially in the morning round," said Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "The thing is we actually played a lot of really good shots. Unfortunately, our poor shots just put us in some awful spots and, in most cases, cost us multiple shots at a time. Once things started to unwind, we tried to play into some places we had no business trying to get the ball into and those decisions caught up to us way too many times.Â
Â
Rakes and
Brendan Dunphy, who each posted 81 (+11) in the first round bounced back with scores of 74 and 76 respectively. The Lancers have done a majority of their damage on par-fives, ranking fifth in the field with an average score of 5.13 (+3).
Â
"We're going to have figure some things out and go play the round we're capable of tomorrow," added Fillman.
Â
The third and final round will kick off on Tuesday, March 30 with live stats being tracked at golfstat.com.
