MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Playing a medal match against the University of Richmond on their home course of Independence Golf Club, the Spiders defeated Longwood men's golf 8.5-0.5 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Consisting of nine stroke-play matches, Richmond held the edge with eight individual wins. The Lancers'
Brendan Dunphy shot a team-low 71, earning a split with Richmond's Michael Baker for the lone Longwood point of the match.
Â
"It was always a tall ask for us to come play Richmond on their own golf course," said Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "Regardless of where we played, the fact is that they had a lot of guys play very well, and we didn't.
Â
"Obviously, Brendan did a nice job for much of the day. He's struggled most of the spring, so that's a good sign for our golf team. Overall, we have a lot to work on this week."
Â
Dunphy led the team with three birdies, as he was the lone Lancer and just one of four golfers in the match to finish below par (-1). Joining Dunphy below 80 for Longwood were
Ryan Hammer (73),
Miles Parroco (76),
Brandon Weaver (77), and
Christian Michael (78).
Â
However, Richmond was comfortable on their home course, averaging round scores of 72.7 across their lineup in Sunday's win. Ben Cooper led both teams with a 69 (-3), beating out Parroco in the third match 69-to-76. Three Spiders tallied scores of 71, as Michael Chilldress beat
Brandon Weaver 77-to-71, Andrew McInerney beat
Ryan Hammer 71-73, and Baker split with Dunphy 71-71.
Â
Sunday's match served as a tune-up for Longwood's next tournament, as they will held to Williamsburg, Va. for the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate from March 29-30. Hosted by William & Mary, the first two rounds will be held on Monday, March 29 at the Gold course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
