LYNCHBURG, VA. – Liberty improved to a program-best 4-0 start to their season as they swept a double-header over Longwood women's tennis on Sunday afternoon.
The pair of duals kicks of a 2021 season for the Lancers that comes on the heels of a 7-3 finish in the 2020 campaign. The Lancers returned three members of their lineup from a season ago in sophomore
Maria Saez, redshirt junior
Crystal Nzewi, and junior
Emma Nurgazieva, while four freshmen made their collegiate debuts for Longwood.
Saez, who went 2-0 in the first position as a freshman in 2020, began the season in the top slot again, dropping tough decisions to Liberty's talented pair of sophomores Alexandra Almborg and Tiffany Nguyen. Saez led the Lancers with 11 games won across the two matches.
Briee Jolliff won six games in her lone dual of the match, falling in a 6-4, 6-2 decision to the Flame's Kelly Lewis. Joining Joliff in making their Lancer debut was
Alexandra Hincu, Grace Hasiguchi, and
Adelaide Thuilot, as the new look Lancers got their first taste of collegiate action.
However, Liberty, picked to finish second in the ASUN preseason poll, was dominant in both singles and doubles, clinching their fourth win of the season. Marina Davtyan, Grave Hashiguchi, and Micaela Ode Mitre all went 2-0 on the day for the Flames, who finished 2020 with a 7-4 record.
