SAVANNAH, Ga. ā On a relentlessly windy day at the Club at Savannah Harbor, Longwood men's golf completed wrapped up their first tournament of 2021.

The Lancers wrapped up their final 20 holes on Sunday afternoon, placing 12
th in the Invitation at Savannah Harbor. Carding scores of 296 and 291 in the first two rounds, Longwood struggled in the closing round, as the challenge of playing through harsh winds led to a final round 318.

"No doubt it was a tough day to play, but everybody in the field had to play under the same conditions," said Longwood head coach
Kevin Fillman. "We did far more damage to ourselves than the wind did.Ā We just have a long way to go with the mental and emotional sides of the game."

Despite the turbulent conditions, freshman
Nick Rakes managed a final round 73, including a two-under, 34 front nine where he picked up one of Longwood's two eagles in the tournament. Making his collegiate debut, the Evington, Va. native finished his tournament 74-77-73ā224 (+8), leading Longwood and ranking 32st overall in the 87 player field. Ā Ā Ā Ā

"Nick handled the conditions extremely well," added Fillman. "He was able to hit a lot of flatter trajectory shots, which allowed him to control his ball much better than most were able to do."

Miles Parroco followed at T-37, posting scores of 75-68-82ā225 (+9), marking the sophomore's fourth career top-40 finish.
Daniel George followed at 72-71-84ā227 (+11), ending T-48 and giving Longwood three players in the top-50.

Mercer took home the team title, finishing 283-284-292ā861 (-3). Mercer ace Tyler Copp led the Bears with scores of 70-68-71ā209 (-7), capturing the individual crown.

As a team, Longwood was one of only two teams to record multiple eagles, as Rakes and junior
Ryan Hammer accomplished a feat matched by only Tennessee Tech.
The Lancers will be off until Thursday, March 4 when they travel to St. Simons Island, Ga. for the Western Carolina Sea Palms Invitational. The three day, 54-hole tournament will run from March 4-6, and be held at the Sea Palms Resort.
