FARMVILLE, Va. – In accordance with health and safety recommendations from local and state health agencies and the NCAA, Longwood athletics will continue its policy prohibiting fan attendance at home athletics events for all sports this spring.
In an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 both on campus and within the Farmville community and closely following guidance from the Virginia Department of Health, Longwood instituted the no-fan policy in the fall before the start of men's and women's basketball seasons. That policy will continue at upcoming home events for baseball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer and softball, as well as all other on-campus Longwood varsity athletics activities.
"While we have missed the traditional gameday atmosphere our Longwood fans and families provide in the stands, our decision to limit our events to competing personnel and essential staff has contributed notably to our ability to host a large number of our scheduled events so far this year," said Longwood athletics director Michelle Meadows.
"To allow our other teams the same opportunity to play their full seasons in the midst of this pandemic, we will extend our attendance policy into the spring, along with other preventative measures, including testing, masking, and social-distancing among our student-athletes and staff. However, my hope is that as the local and national outlook related to COVID-19 improves, we will slowly be able to welcome fans back to our venues."
University health officials and athletics department leadership will regularly review the fan attendance policy throughout the semester and will announce changes to the current policy if conditions change.
