Longwood Cheerleading Alumna Ashley Helms Named New Cheer Head coach
FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood cheerleading alumna and former team captain Ashley Helms has returned to her alma mater as the Lancers' new cheerleading coach, Athletics Director
Michelle Meadows announced Friday.
A 2019 graduate who cheered for the Lancers from 2015-19, Helms takes over a Longwood program that has become a key component of the basketball gameday experience in Willett Hall.
During her days as a flyer and tumbler, Helms cheered for Longwood men's and women's basketball for four seasons, including at four Big South Men's Basketball Championships and three Big South Women's
Basketball Championships. She was also heavily involved in a number of athletics and campus organizations, including the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Lancer Leadership program, and Longwood Movers & Shakers. She served SAAC as a representative for the Longwood Student Government Association (SGA) and, as a senior in 2018-19, was appointed cheerleading captain by her teammates and coaches.
"I'm excited to be back at Longwood University," Helms said. "I'm eager to elevate this cheer team and coach the members to be great representatives of the school."
A business administration major with a concentration in real estate, Helms earned her Bachelor of Science from Longwood in May of 2019. She is currently a design coordinator for HHHunt Homes in Midlothian, Va., and was formerly a design intern with Eagle Construction of Virginia as an undergraduate.
From Chester, Va., Helms takes over the Longwood cheerleading team from her former head coach and current Longwood Associate Director of Campus Career Engagement
Megan Miller, who stepped down from her post earlier this fall after 10 years as head coach.
Helms' first Longwood cheerleading squad will make its debut in Willett Hall on Nov. 12 during the home-opening men's and women's basketball doubleheader. That twinbill will begin with the women's tipoff against Stony Brook at noon and follow with the men's opener against Virginia University of Lynchburg at 7 p.m.
