Longwood Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at ODU/OBX Invitational

Men's Golf /
POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Christian Michael posted his second straight round below par in the final tournament of the fall for the Longwood men's golf team, and the Lancers finished ninth at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Kilmarlic Golf Club.

Michael matched his second round score with a one-under 70 to help keep the Lancers in the middle of the 17-team pack on the par-71, 6,564-yard course.

The junior ripped off two eagles on a windy day and was the only player in the course to post more than one eagle in the final round. The Crimora, Va. native was also one of three players to score a whole stroke below par on par-5's. His back-to-back 70's over the final two days of the three-day event helped offset a tough opening round, allowing him to finish in a tie for 40th (80-70-70—220, +7).

"Big numbers!  That was the story of the day and our entire week," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "We played plenty of under-par holes, but it's difficult to be in contention when a team plays as many poor holes as we did throughout the tournament. The real Kilmarlic showed up today. After having very little wind for 90 percent of the last two days, the wind showed up today. That's this golf course's defense, and there were times when we just didn't handle it very well."

The Lancers led the field with three eagles and added 13 birdies in a volatile final round. Nick Rakes posted a four-over 75 to end his three days at par, tying him for 21st with his 70-68-75—213 (E) that also was the lowest three-day total on the team. Brendan Dunphy matched him with a 75 and had one of Longwood's three eagles in the final round to finish in a tie for 47th (73-73-75—221, +8).

"Today's round is tough because we have to take it into our offseason. Outside of a couple rounds, we've had a pretty good fall, but this one's going to stay in the front of our minds for the next three and a half months. We're going to use it as motivation to get better over the winter so we can hit the ground running when our spring season gets here."

Ryan Hammer posted a 71-74-77—222 (+9) to finish in a tie for 53rd, and Scott Jordan tied for 67th with his 77-72-78—227 (+14).

With the fall season complete, the Lancers will begin preparing for their spring season. The team travels to The Invitational at Savannah Harbor in mid-February.
