Nguidjol's Last Minute Goal Delivers Senior Day Heartbreak

Presbyterian Goal with 40 Seconds Remaining Sends Blue Hose Past Longwood 2-1

FARMVILLE, Va. – In the midst of a tight, fast-paced match, one strike can change everything. For Presbyterian, Nile Nguidjol delivered with less than a minute to play to give the Blue Hose a 2-1 win over Longwood men's soccer on Saturday afternoon.

The sophomore's header with 40 seconds to play broke a 1-1 deadlock in a match that saw a combined 31 shots as the two teams traded blows throughout the match. Nguidjol's nod home off a feed from Jaume Rubio gave the Blue Hose (6-4-2, 2-3-1) their second straight win that also brought a group of five teams together in the middle of the Big South standings that are battling for playoff spots.

For the Lancers (5-8-2, 3-3-1), the loss on senior day snapped a two-match winning streak that had them at third in the conference standings

"Always a bitter pill to swallow to lose in that fashion, and we have to own that," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "On the day we weren't quite good enough. We started bright enough and built a platform to kick on, but it never happened fully and left the game in the balance. That allowed Presbyterian to grind back into it, which is fair play to them, but we have to shake the heads and finish strong."

Longwood's offense lead the way for the bright start, with the Lancers pressing forward for the first six shots of the match. Mason Butcher smashed home the opening goal as a part of the effort off a corner kick in the third minute. Markus Gronli served a corner kick into the box that was punched away by Blue Hose goalkeeper Valentin Kliebe, but Butcher was the first to it at the top of the box to send a screamer into the corner off Kliebe's outstretched hands.

The Blue Hose defense prevented any further damage, and the offense started to get into gear. Ndrin Maloku equalized the score in the 36th minute with a strike at the top of the box off a pass from Marshall Dickson, and PC posted 18 shots in the match.

The Lancers have two matches remaining in the season as they battle for a playoff spot. First, the team hosts UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in their final home match of the season. The team then heads out to Radford to close the year on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Both matches will be aired on ESPN+.
