BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's high octane offense took a little bit to get going against the Longwood men's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex, but a pair of second-half goals proved to be the difference for the Camels.
Campbell (9-3-1, 4-0-0 Big South), which boasts the sixth-highest scoring attack in the country at 2.75 goals per match, spread the scoring around, as three different players scored. The Camels posted 22 shots in the match while taking 14 corners with a relentless approach. Bissafi Dotte got the team on the board with his first goal of the season, and Jake Morris and Gerard Broussard added goals after halftime to keep the team atop the Big South standings four matches into conference play.
Longwood's (3-7-2, 2-2-1) defensive effort managed to fend off 14 first-half shots against one goal for a solid start to the match.
Jacob Reimers made four saves to go with the dogged defending by the back line, and the Lancers found space for a counter that led to
Markus Gronli's penalty kick goal in the 31
st minute. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season and moved him into a tie for second in the conference in goals.
Gronli's goal gave Longwood a breath of life, but the match changed when
Mason Butcher was shown his second yellow of the match and sent off a few minutes later.
"While we were very aware what we were up against, we didn't apply our principles with full conviction in the first half and felt at 1-1 we should play better out of the break," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "But the red card killed the game for us. It's an opportunity lost, and we will address certain aspects and move on."
While Longwood went into halftime tied at one, the Camels came out in attack mode to start the second half. Morris scored off a corner kick for his third goal of the season, and Broussard added one in the 67
th minute with his fourth of the year to help put the match to rest.
Longwood stays on the road for two more matches, with a trip to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. followed by a match at in-state rival Liberty on Tuesday, Oct. 19. They return home to host Presbyterian on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
