FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood pushed George Washington to the wire, but a comeback in singles play fell short as the Colonials outlasted the Lancers 4-2 Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Courts.
 
Lancer ace Amadeo Blasco and freshman standout Ignacio Sandoval both put Longwood (6-5) within striking distance in the non-conference showdown, but George Washington (7-4) grinded out a pair of three-set wins at singles lines Nos. 4 and 5 to clinch the victory.
 
Blasco and Sandoval both won their bouts in straight sets, with Blasco taking down George Washington frontrunner Zicheng Zeng 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 1 slot and Sandoval sweeping Ben Barnett 7-6, 7-5 at No. 3. That win was the fifth straight for Blasco and the third in a row for Sandoval, who lead the Lancers with singles records of 7-3 and 8-3, respectively, on the year.
 
However, it was Jakub Behun and Lawrence Sciglitano who put the Colonials over the top, with both pulling out three-set wins over Lancers Guillermo Cagigas and Ernest Rocabert to clinch the win. Both Cagigas and Rocabert rallied from first-set defeats to win set two, but Behun took the final set against Cagigas to pull out a 7-6, 2-6, 6-1 win, while Sciglitano rallied from his second-set loss to topple Rocabert 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
 
The loss snaps a two-match win streak for the Lancers, who are in the midst of a five-game homestand that continues this Sunday against Big South foe USC Upstate. That match will begin at 10 a.m. at the Lancer Courts and will be the first of two straight Big South home bouts for the Lancers, who then get nearly a full week to prepare for a bout against Gardner-Webb the following Saturday, March 14.
