FARMVILLE, Va. - Competing in their second dual in as many days, the Lancers once again put on a dominant performance.
Led by three singles wins, the Longwood women's tennis team defeated North Carolina A&T, 4-0 on Monday morning in Farmville. The Lancers tallied three wins in singles play after capturing the first two doubles matches to clinch the victory in dominant fashion for the second straight day.
With the win, Longwood improved to 6-2 and has now recorded three shutout wins this season, including two in a row after Sunday's 4-0 win over Mount Saint Mary's. The latest win for the Lancers continues their torrid pace in singles play, as the team now holds an overall mark of 27-15 in solo competition. With two more wins today, Longwood also improved to 12-10 in doubles competition.
Freshman
Maria Saez and senior
Jamie Breunig got the Lancers off to a fast start Monday, notching a dominant 6-0 win over the Aggies (0-6) Ameer Robertson and Marlene Estenssoro to start doubles competition. Longwood's top pair,
Maria Saez and
Yulia Almiron, won comfortably, 6-2, to clinch the dual's opening point for the Lancers—the Longwood duo is now 5-2 playing together in the spring season.
In singles play, Saez and Breunig continued their dominant run with two more victories. Saez dropped just one game across two sets in her 6-0, 6-1 win over Robertson as she improved to 5-2 in 2020, and Breunig finished off Estenssoro shortly after, 6-3, 6-0 as the pair wasted no time in securing the second and third Lancer points. Both
Emma Nurgazieva and
Yulia Almiron notched first set wins at the first and second positions respectively, with Longwood now needing just one more win to clinch victory.
After winning the first set in dominant fashion, 6-1, Almiron dueled NC A&T's Mikaya Hamilton in an intense second set, where Almiron ultimately pulled ahead for good, 7-5. Nurgazieva's battle would end up unfinished, as the fourth point clinched victory for the Lancers. In total, Longwood was 8-0 in finished matches in the back to back slate from March 1-2.
Longwood will continue their season with three straight Big South conference games in their next three mathces. Up next is a clash with Radford, set for Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in Farmville, Va.
