Longwood’s Singles Dominance Continues in 6-1 Victory over N.C. Central

Women's Tennis /
DURHAM, N.C. – The Longwood women's tennis team continues to roll on the road.

The Lancers collected three doubles wins and five singles wins on their way to a 6-1 victory over N.C. Central on Saturday afternoon at Elmira Park. With the victory, Longwood improves to 4-1 on the season, with all their victories coming away from Farmville. The win also avenges a defeat to N.C. Central a year ago, when they lost 4-3 on March 2, 2019.

"We played extremely, especially in doubles," said head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez, who has his team out to a 4-1 start for the second straight season. "This team beat us a year ago, so we have been working for a year with the goal to have a different outcome. I am extremely proud of our girls to not only win, but to win by doing the right things that have been working for us, and for that I am extremely proud of them.

"Our players are working hard every day, and you can see that it is paying off. I want to congratulate them, and continue to work on the little things, the energy on every point, and the details so you can get the outcome that you want."

Maria Saez, Yulia Almiron, Emma Nurgazieva, and Marija Venta all improved to 4-1 in singles play in the spring, as the Lancers needed only two sets in all five of their singles victories. Senior Jamie Breunig returned from her two game absence with a dominant win, defeating Central's Polina Sakhorova 6-0, 6-0.

The Lancers continued their dominance in the upper echelon of singles play, as they now hold records of 4-1 in the first four positions in singles play. Overall, the Lancers are 21-9 in singles play.

In doubles play, the Lancers dropped just 10 games in a trio of 6-2, 6-3, and 6-4 victories. With her victory in the first position with teammate Maria Saez, Yulia Almiron improved to a team-best 4-1 in doubles competition in the spring season.

The Lancers will begin Big South play on Thursday, Feb. 27 when they take on Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C. Play is set to start at 10 a.m.
