Elon Hands Longwood Women’s Tennis First Loss of Spring

ELON, N.C. - Led by senior Alex Koniaev and sophomore Victoria Saldh, Elon women's tennis team handed Longwood their first loss of the spring, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Phoenix improved to 5-1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, with a 6-4 overall record.
Saturday's loss is just the first of the spring season for the Lancers, who opened up their season 3-0 with victories over Mary Washington, Bluefield State, and Christopher Newport. Entering today's match, Longwood had lost just one singles match across three spring duals as they finish their opening four duals, all of which were away from Farmville, 3-1.
Elon grabbed an early advantage by snagging the doubles point on the strength of three wins, led by the pairing of Koniav and and Olivia Archer's victory over the Lancers'
Yulia Almiron and
Maria Saez. Koniaev added a singles victory over Almiron, and Archer notched a victory over
Emma Nurgazieva.
The Phoenix started hot in singles play, winning the five and six matchups to build a 3-0 lead over the Longwood.
Marija Venta dropped a narrow loss to Elon's Kiana Rizzolo, 6-4, 6-4 in a fourth position battle for just her first loss of the season. Charlotte Wilm made her season debut this afternoon for the Lancers, competing in both singles and doubles.
The Lancers return to Farmville on Friday, Feb. 21 for a dual with N.C. Central.
