FARMVILLE, Va. – In August, 2010, the Longwood community marched through Farmville and descended upon the Longwood Athletics Complex to kick off a new year.
Ten years later, the Lancers are still marching.
In one of the most unique traditions in higher education, Longwood celebrated the 10th annual Greatest Athletics March Ever this past Friday and trekked more than a mile through the Town of Farmville. This year's destination was the Longwood women's soccer game against Charlotte, and a crowd of more than 1,500 made the trip.
To get the scoop on the tradition that Longwood University has fondly dubbed The G.A.M.E., Lancer women's basketball senior Dayna Rouse went on the scene to find out what it's all about and how the event has changed over the years.
Started in 2010, The G.A.M.E. is an annual campus-wide pep rally and march through Farmville that culminates with a Lancer athletics contest at the Longwood Athletics Complex, home of Longwood's fall sports. The event has grown every year, but the march and the distribution of the highly anticipated and much-demanded Longwood scarf have remained the backbone of the Longwood tradition.
