PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Ander Etxaniz stayed hot for a second straight match for the Longwood men's soccer team.
The junior drove home two goals for the second straight outing as Longwood (3-1) shut out Robert Morris (1-5) 3-0 Sunday afternoon at North Athletic Complex.
Longwood's latest multi-goal outburst continued the team's historic pace, as the Lancers have now set a new Division I-era benchmark with 11 goals through their first four games of the season. That marks the best total since the 2001 team had 13 goals in its first four matches.
Six different Lancers have scored in that span, but Etxaniz has led the way. The Spaniard boasts a team-high four goals, all in the past two games, after coming into 2019 with two career goals as a Lancer.
Meanwhile, the Lancer defense bent but didn't break on the way to its second shutout of 2019. The backline combined with junior goalkeeper Jacob Reimers to keep Robert Morris in check, withstanding seven shots on goal, all of which Reimers stoppped.
"To get a result on the road is very credible, and to make it a staple will need this plus a bag of chips," head coach Jon Atkinson said. "While I felt we were the team that should control it to the final whistle, it was sloppy in big parts. The lads know it, and the standards we set are far higher than what was produced today, but we can at least go into Navy on a positive result and try to improve with each passing game."
Etxaniz broke a scoreless tie in a back-and-forth first half in the 43rd minute after corralling a bouncing ball in the midfield. The junior found himself with space straightaway from 25 yards out and immediately curled a gorgeous ball inside the post and past a diving Christian Snatchko to give Longwood a 1-0 lead and the momentum.
The momentum carried through the early part of the second half as Willie Miezan and Markus Gronli combined to stretch the lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute. The two executed a delayed give-and-go, with Gronli driving home his first goal of 2019 from 12 yards out. Gronli became the sixth goal-scorer of the season for Longwood's offense.
Robert Morris kept peppering shots toward the Longwood goal after halftime and outshot Longwood 10-7 in the final 45 minutes, though only two of those were on target. RMU's Riccardo Rota hit the crossbar in the 49th minute, but Reimers and his crew swept up everything else.
In the 81st minute, Etxaniz snuffed out any hope for RMU. AJ Kmiec lofted a free kick from the right side into the six-yard box, and Etxaniz nodded it home for the final tally.
The Lancers head back to Farmville to host Navy on Wednesday night to open up a two-match homestand. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
