Longwood University Athletics

Fredericksburg, Va. - The Longwood women's tennis team kicked off the fall season by going 8-4 in singles matches against members of George Mason and Mary Washington at the University of Mary Washington Classic kickoff on Saturday afternoon. 

The Lancers were led by strong performances from Jamie Breunig, Emma Nurgazieva, and Maria Saez, who all went 2-0 in their single matches. Yulia Almiron and Marija Venta also added wins for Longwood.

Breunig defeated Bree Gibbs of George Mason in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, to start her day. The senior then defeated Abby Moghtader 6-4, 6-4, for her second sweep of the day.

Nurgazieva dropped just three games in a sweep of Mary Washington's Rachel Summers, defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. She was in top form for her second match as well, defeating George Mason's Hannah Harrod 6-3, 6-2. 

Saez fought back from a first-set defeat to Rachel Cooper of UMW to win 4-6, 6-2, (10-8). She ended her day with a win after Bree Gibbs of George Mason retired in her final match of the day. She held a 4-0 first set lead at the time. 

The Lancers will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of the Mary Washington Classic kickoff.
