FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing its final home match of the season, and most likely ever on Lancer Courts, the Longwood women's tennis won five of six matches in singles to earn its fourth win in its last six matches Wednesday afternoon.
On the same day that Longwood University announced a $15 million gift from Joan Brock '64 that will initiate construction of a new convocation center and tennis facility, Longwood made its likely final home match at Lancer Courts count. The Lancers (12-7, 1-5 Big South)Â prevailed over Hampton (2-14, 0-9 Big South) in the first Big South matchup between the two Commonwealth foes to secure its first season above the .500 mark since the 2010-11 season.
Â
Hampton took the doubles point with wins on courts No. 1 and 2, as the Hampton top pair of Kiah Turner Cherise Slocombe earned a 6-1 victory over Longwood's No. 1 duo of
Crystal Nzewi and
Emma Nurgazieva. The Pirates secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win from the No. 2 pair of Yulia Kapitanova and Viktoria Ljungman against the Longwood duo of
Anika Tylek and
Marija Venta.
Â
Longwood's pair of
Yulia Almiron and
Jamie Breunig collected their team-best 11th doubles win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Haley Mullins and Julia D'auvergne.
Â
The Lancers answered in singles, winning five of six matches with three of those victories coming in straight sets.
Â
Tylek claimed the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over D'Auvergne at the No. 6 position, marking her 12th victory of the year and secure her third straight victory.
Â
On court two, Almiron captured her team-leading 17th win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Slocombe while Nurgazieva cruised in her match to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ljungman.
Â
Breunig earned her sixth three-set win of the season, coming back after dropping the first set 6-2 to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Turner. That match marks her team-high 15th win of the spring season, moving to 13-3 while playing either the No. 2 or 3 positions in the order.
Â
At the top position, Venta secured her win over Kapitanova in a third set tiebreak, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, as she collected her 12th singles win.
Â
Nzewi battled hard in her match against Mullins, falling in a third-set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Â
Longwood begins its stretch run before next week's Big South Tournament, as the Lancers travel South newcomer in USC Upstate Friday, April 12 before concluding the regular season at Gardner-Webb Saturday, April 13.
