Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten With 6-1 Win at Chowan

Lancers Improve to 3-0 for Second Time in Division I Era

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Longwood women can now consider themselves on a winning streak.

For only the second time in the program's Division I era, the Lancer women improved to 3-0 after making quick work of Chowan 6-1 on the road Friday afternoon at the Rose Family Tennis Courts.

Playing alongside the Longwood men in a combined road trip the Tar Heel State, the Lancer women dropped just one game in doubles play and then steamrolled the Hawks (0-1) in singles with five straight-set wins.

Now 3-0 for the first time since 2014-15, the Lancers have outscored their opponents 18-5 this season, including back-to-back 6-1 wins over Bluefield State and Chowan and a 6-3 victory over Division III powerhouse Christopher Newport.

"It was nice to get the win today, but I think we still have a ways to go," said freshman Anika Tylek, who won at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles alongside junior teammate Marija Venta.

"Our confidence has definitely gone up, but we know we can improve. We're working hard on the court now, and we just need to translate our training into our matches."

That confidence permeated Longwood's entire lineup, as every Lancer that took the court Friday picked up a win. Among those were sophomore Yulia Almiron and junior Jamie Breunig, who won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and teamed up for another win at No. 2 doubles.

Those two, who have played at Longwood's top two singles slots in all three matches to start the year, both dispatched their top-tier Chowan counterparts in short order, with Almiron taking down Cynthia Carrier 6-3, 6-1 and Breunig knocking off Arina Karbolina 6-0, 6-2.

However it was Longwood's two freshman newcomers who set the tone in the one-sided win, picking up back-to-back singles wins at Nos. 5 and 3 to clinch the early win. Kyrgyzstan native Emma Nurgazieva was perfect against Claire Revelle with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5, while Tylek, the Ontario native, followed shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Julieta Lecce at No. 3.

Those wins improved Breunig, Nurgazieva and Tylek to 3-0 in singles play this spring and bumped Longwood to 14-4 in singles flights for the season.

Tylek also paired with junior Marija Venta for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, the pair's first win atop the Lancer doubles lineup.

"The women played well and I'm happy for the win, but I think we could have done a better job with how we carried ourselves in terms of energy, attitude and being responsible to the principles we work on in training," Longwood head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez said. "It wasn't there consistently, and we can't allow ourselves to be that type of team. When we move forward and play bigger and better teams on our schedule, if we don't have the ability to deal with those elements of the game, we're going to end up losing."

After handling three straight non-Division I foes to start the year, Longwood will now take its first D-I test next Thursday, Feb. 14 with a trip to Big East member Georgetown. That matchup in Washington, D.C., precedes a Sunday trip to Division III powerhouse Mary Washington on Sunday, Feb. 17, that will be the Lancers' final road match before the home opener against N.C. Central on Feb. 20.
