FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood junior defender
Carrie Reaver added to her ever-expanding resume with another academic accolade, earning first-team recognition on the CoSIDA Academic All-District III Team, the organization announced this week.
Â
The reigning Big South Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a three-year starter in the backfield, Reaver earned her most recent honor on the strength of a 4.0 grade point average as a biology major and neurostudies and chemistry dual minor at Longwood. It is the second straight Academic All-District III award for Reaver, who also earned second-team recognition as a sophomore in 2018.
Â
Reaver is the 13th Longwood student-athlete to earn Academic All-District honors since the start of the school's Division I era in 2004 and is now eligible for the Academic All-America Team, which is voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America as well as a specially appointed committee.
Â
A native of Thurmont, Md., she is the fourth Longwood women's soccer player to earn a spot on the All-District team, joining former all-around standouts Maddie Stevens (2008),
Lindsey Ottavio (2010) and
Kelsey McDonald (2014). McDonald – Longwood's former valedictorian and an All-Big South defender – is the most recent Lancer to receive Academic All-District honors from any sport and one of nine Lancers on that list.
Â
This year's academic honor is the latest in a decorated career for Reaver, who has been an all-around standout since her inaugural season when she was named Big South Freshman of the Year and helped Longwood reach the 2017 Big South Championship game. She has since gone on to start 49 games and earn All-Big South honorable mention honors as a sophomore and second team recognition as a junior.
Â
This season Reaver led the Lancers in minutes played with 1,304 despite missing the final two games with an injury – the first missed games of her Longwood career. As the anchor of Longwood's backline, she helped engineer six shutouts and a 1.07 goals against average, both of which placed the Lancers among the Big South's top five in those categories for the third straight year.
Â
Reaver also spent her summer pursuing professional aspirations as an intern at a hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She assisted doctors and nurses during her months-long stay while also taking Spanish-language medical classes.
Â
CoSIDA's longstanding Academic All-America program recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Nominees are voted upon by members of the CoSIDA organization, which is comprised of collegiate athletics communications professionals from around the nation.
Â
Honorees selected to Academic All-District first teams advance to the Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced in early December.
Â
Longwood's previous Academic All-Americans include Mindy Allman (1983 | at-large/field hockey), Christina Barrett (1986, 1987, 1988 | at-large/golf), Dennis Hale (1991 | baseball), Cassie Ensley (1995, basketball), Nikki Hall (1997 | basketball), Jeremy Knicely (2003, baseball), Jennifer Potts (2003 | softball), Evan Weinstein (2003, 2004 | baseball) and McDonald (2014 | soccer).
