Almiron & Nurgazieva Earn No. 1 Singles Wins at Powell Invitational

Women's Tennis /
ELON, N.C. – Day one of the Jimmy Powell Invitational saw Longwood pick up a pair of singles wins at the No. 1 slot in matchups against Elon and Davidson Saturday at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Longwood junior Yulia Almiron and sophomore Emma Nurgazieva alternated turns at the top of Longwood's lineup and each won in that spot, as Almiron defeated Elon ace Alex Koniaev 6-4, 6-4, and Nurgazieva topped Davidson's top player Samantaha Armas 6-4, 6-2.

Lancer senior Jamie Breunig also picked up a singles win at No. 5 singles against Davidson's Alyssa Hann 6-2, 6-2.

"We played good teams today, and we're at a point in the season where we're still working on certain things," Longwood director of tennis Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez said. "Yulia was able to beat No. 1 against Elon and Emma the No. 1 from Davidson, which is good. There were some matches that were competitive, and I believe we need to maintain our strategies to win more matches and be disciplined to get ourselves points."

Elon responded to Almiron's singles win of their ace by claiming wins at the remaining five singles positions. Davidson also avenged Nurgazieva's defeat of their ace with four singles wins and a doubles sweep.

"Tomorrow we'll have the opportunity to play two doubles rounds and singles against Richmond, and we're going to continue to be able to get ourselves ready for regionals and the spring, which is where we need to be peaking. Physically though, I thought the team was pretty good and solid. We just need to be more mindful of how to play and how to maintain the feedback I provide as a coach and continue to evolve through that."

The final day of the Jimmy Powell Invitational will pit Longwood against Elon in doubles and Richmond in both singles and doubles.
