CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The only thing that could slow down the Longwood women's tennis team this weekend was Mother Nature.
The Lancers competed in two duals this weekend at the WCU Fall Invite, handily winning both. After sweeping North Carolina A&T, Longwood defeated Breanu 6-3 in a dual to finish the weekend 2-0. Their third scheduled dual against host Western Carolina was cut short and canceled due to inclement weather.
Five Lancers went 2-0 in singles play over the weekend, as the team combined for a dominant 11-1 showing in singles play across the two duals.
Crystal Nzewi dropped just three games in two singles matches, defeating her opposition on NC A&T 6-2, 6-1, and Brenau's Bowen 6-0, 6-0. Joining her with two singles wins each were Emma Nurgazeiva,
Jamie Breunig,
Maria Saez, and Marjia Venta, while
Yulia Almiron added a win of her own.
In total, the team combined for a dual record of 14-3 across both doubles and singles play while capturing both matches comfortably. This continues an impressive fall season that has also seen a clean sweep of titles at the Walter Johnson Memorial Invitational on Sept. 20.
Up next for the Lancers will be the ITA Regionals hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Play will start on Friday, Oct. 25.
