More Records Set as Longwood Shows Out on Presidential Honor Roll

General /
FARMVILLE, Va. – In the bookend to a milestone academic year for Longwood athletics, a record 60.3 percent of Longwood student-athletes earned recognition on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, as announced by the conference office Thursday.

A school-record total of 111 Longwood student-athletes received the annual recognition from the conference, marking the first time that more than 60 percent of Longwood's student-athlete population earned a spot the prestigious Big South list that recognizes those who held grade point averages of at least 3.0 during the 2017-18 academic year.

Longwood's record percentage was sixth overall in the conference, the highest among its Virginia-based Big South peers, and surpassed the conference-wide average of 58.7 percent (1,750 out of 2,982 Big South student-athletes). Longwood's honorees in 2017-18 featured representation from 12 of 13 Big South-affiliated sports, while an additional 21 student-athletes from the field hockey team – a member of the Mid-American Conference – also met the 3.00 GPA threshold.

The Big South Presidential Honor Roll recognition follows a 2017-18 campaign in which student-athletes from Longwood's 14 varsity programs combined to post a 3.08 grade point average for the year, which was among the highest of the university's Division I era that began in 2004-05. The Lancers earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 during both the fall and spring semesters to improve on the 3.01 GPA the group posted during the 2016-17 year.

"I'm thrilled, and our entire staff is proud to have witnessed such a sustained, department-wide effort by our student-athletes this past year," said Longwood athletics director Troy Austin. "These President's List numbers are the byproduct of a tremendous effort by many people, obviously the student-athletes themselves, and also our coaches, our student-athlete enhancement unit and our wonderful Longwood faculty.

"We strive to provide our student-athletes a positive experience on a holistic level, and we as a department take pride in contributing to their development as students and people, not just athletes. Numbers like this demonstrate the value in that approach, but even more so, they reflect the commitment our student-athletes make every day, be it in the classroom or the playing field."

In addition to the overall numbers, 10 Longwood student-athletes earn the Commissioner's Award for holding a perfect 4.0 GPA for the academic year. That award – a new classification this year along with the Gold Award (3.75-3.99 GPA), Silver Award (3.50-3.74) and Bronze Award (3.00-3.49) – went to Lancers representing five different sports: Carlos Garrido (baseball), Patrick Gobran (men's golf), Dana Joss (women's lacrosse), Charleigh Kondas (women's lacrosse), Kathryn Miller (women's soccer), Zach Morgan (men's soccer), Janese Quick (women's soccer), Carrie Reaver (women's soccer), Paige Robertson (women's soccer) and Kate Spradlin (women's basketball). Along with those Commissioner's Award selections, Longwood field hockey senior Kate Colley also met the 4.0 benchmark for the year.

The 111 Big South Presidential Honor Roll selections were also a record for Longwood athletics, marking the department's highest total since joining the conference during the 2012-13 season. Longwood has now placed at least 100 student-athletes and at least 50 percent of its student-athlete body on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll for five consecutive years.
