Longwood Earns Hard-Fought Draw in 110-Minute Battle at Towson

Almeida Scores Second Goal of Season as Lancers Grind Out 1-1 Tie Against Senior-Laden Tigers

TOWSON, Md. – For a game that ended without a winner, Longwood and Towson left the field quite battle-worn and weary.

The Lancers (1-2-1) and Tigers clashed for a full 110 minutes and two overtime periods before settling for a hard-fought 1-1 draw on a clear Sunday afternoon at the Tiger Soccer Complex. The game featured a combined 31 shots and numerous game-saving moments on both sides, but ultimately it was Longwood senior Kelly Almeida and Towson junior Justine Stoner who provided the lone goals in the deadlock.

"Games like this shape our competitive character and prepare us for what lies ahead in conference," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "That's a team that beat us last year, so that result is a sign of progress."

The draw was Longwood's first of the season and came against a veteran-laden Towson (0-3-1) team anchored by 10 seniors and a starting lineup comprised entirely of juniors and seniors. The Lancers allowed just five shots on goal and survived eight corner kicks, while the Tigers enjoyed a five-save performance from goalkeeper Megan Collins.

"We definitely deserved a point from that game the way we fought and battled throughout the 90 minutes and overtime," Dyer said. "We were really good the first 30 minutes creating chances and threatening goal, but then we had to withstand some pressure defensively in the second half."

The game finally broke open in the 50th minute courtesy of Almeida, who drilled a loose ball into the back of the net in the follow-up to a shot from Emily Mothersbaugh that Collins saved at close range. That goal was the second of the season for Almeida, a former walk-on who is now tied with fellow senior Paige Robertson as Longwood's goals leaders.

However, it took just seven minutes for Towson to respond, as Stoner drove a left-footed laser from outside the penalty box that skipped off of Longwood keeper Madison Van Dyke's outstretched fingers and into the Lancer goal. That was the lone blemish on Van Dyke's performance, though, as she withstood eight corner kicks and stopped the other four shots on goal she faced, including a diving save in the final five minutes of the second overtime period.

The draw concludes a two-game road trip to the Northeast for the Lancers, who will return home this Friday, Aug. 31, to host the reigning Southern Conference runner-up UNCG Spartans at 7 p.m. at the Longwood Athletics Park. That will be Longwood's second home game of the season and will stream live on ESPN+.
